dSPACE Launches Modular Testing Concept for Battery Management Systems

The BMS testing system can be adapted to test battery systems for a range of applications from electromobility to energy storage.

Simulation and validation company dSPACE has introduced a modular system concept designed to aid testing of battery management systems (BMS). Battery systems with a voltage up to 1,500V can be tested with this new concept.

The BMS testing system's modularity enables it to be used for various applications, including electromobility and energy storage systems, for development and validation of battery systems. 

A high-precision cell voltage emulation board is a key component of the BMS testing system. It ensures cell voltage generation with a high degree of precision down to 300 µV says dSPACE in its press release announcing the launch of the BMS testing concept. Emulation of sophisticated cell balancing scenarios is possible as the board can support peak currents up to 200 A per channel and provide high-precision current measurement. 

Fault simulation is integrated as well to enable users to simulate electrical faults a customer might experience such as short circuits or cable breaks. Additional emulation boards for temperature and high voltages will become available in the future as well to expand upon the testing capabilities of the system. 

Additional features include:

  • integration with dSPACE's SCALEXIO technology which enables hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and rapid control prototyping (RCP)
  • use with ASM Electric Components provides library of battery models to ensure accuracy
  • fast updates of individual cell voltages
  • integration of FPGA applications
