MJC Engineering, Huntington Beach, Calif., a long-time builder of CNC metal-spinning, rotary-forge, and flow-forming machines, recently introduced a non-traditional member to its Spectra line of hydraulic power units (HPU). Dubbed Green Hydraulic Power, the new HPU provides higher machine yield, reduces noise generation by 20 dBA, and generates less heat than conventional power units. It also shortens cycle time on a variety of machine types and requires less oil in its reservoir. Perhaps best of all, the Green Hydraulic Power HPU can reduce electrical input energy by as much as 70%.
Green Hydraulic Power uses a Siemens Sinamics variable-speed servopump drive that can offer complete payback in 12 to 24 months. MJC President Carl Lorentzen says, “We saw that the servopump could control pressure and flow, as they precisely convert electric energy into hydraulic power. In some cases, the use of control valves is partially or completely eliminated, depending on the application.”
Advantages of the Sinamics drive include:
• high dynamic performance,
• low noise emission,
• smaller volume of oil required,
• low heat generation, and
• small carbon footprint.
The system has the added benefit of control data output from an onboard diagnostic capability in the drive. It supplies information for a predictive maintenance protocol in an Industry 4.0 scenario. The basics of pressure, temperature, and acceleration data measurement are standard; additional data outputs on oil level, filter condition, running efficiency, and other parameters are available. The result can be up to a 70% reduction in onsite servicing requirements over conventional HPUs.
The Spectra Line comes with standard reservoirs of 100, 200, or 300 gal, and a pressure rating to 4,000 psi. Two styles are available—a variable-frequency drive with asynchronous motor and internal gear pump, or a servo-inverter consisting of a synchronous servomotor and internal gear pump.
