Higher Voltages Call for Increased Cooling Capacity

Oct. 24, 2022
The move to higher voltage ranges in electric vehicles and equipment requires development of new thermal management systems.

Technical Services (UK) Ltd—a thermal management technology developer which is the UK-based European technical partner of U.S. electric pump and fan manufacturer EMP—has introduced a new high-voltage thermal management system. It can be used in full- or hybrid-electric vehicles as well as those powered by fuel cells; applications include heavy-duty vehicles such as trucks and construction equipment.

The system contains many of the components found in a typical electric vehicle (EV) cooling loop – pumps, heat exchangers, fans and connecting parts. It is available as an off-the-shelf kit or can be customized for specific application needs.

The new high-voltage system builds upon the company’s work with low-voltage systems said Andrew McMahon, managing director of Technical Services, in an interview with Power & Motion. “We see ourselves in a second or third phase of a new market, and the iterative improvements that come with that,” he said. “We’ve seen radical changes moving from IC (internal combustion) engines to EV battery and fuel cell powertrains.”

McMahon said early EVs were usually smaller, battery-operated platforms. As such, their cooling demand could be managed with modest flow rate and modest heat rejection and therefore a low-voltage cooling system could be utilized.

“But we see as the market has expanded for wider use cases, and ultimately the size and capacity of the machines have increased, so has the cooling demand. It’s really driven the development of HV (high voltage) components,” he said.

Technical Services is exhibiting the high-voltage thermal management system at bauma 2022, one of the world’s largest construction and mining industry trade shows.
