ZQuip Aims to Ease Transition to Electrification for Construction Equipment Industry

April 22, 2024
The creation of a plug-and-play platform with all necessary components makes it easier to convert construction equipment from diesel to electric power.

ZQuip, a subsidiary of Moog Construction, has developed a plug-and-play platform to enable conversion of diesel-powered construction equipment to electric. All necessary components for doing so, including batteries, electric motors and thermal management technologies, are included.

Development of the system came about after working with various OEMs to create full-electric machines, said Chris LaFleur, Managing Director, ZQuip. The platform, also known as ZQuip, came about “as a result of what we learned in those early days of electrification,” he said. “It was our desire to put our own stamp on the industry, to move in a way that we thought was different but better.”

In addition, the company saw the pace of change happening in the construction equipment industry and thought it could do something to help accelerate the adoption of electrification.

The system is modular and capable of working with existing systems on a machine, such as the hydraulics, which helps to ease installation and servicing. This makes it easier to switch to an electric machine without having to purchase a brand-new piece of equipment. And the system can be used with any type of machine.

In this interview with Power & Motion, LaFleur and his colleague Rob Bauer, Engineering Manager at ZQuip, provide an overview of the system’s design and how it can be used with various types of construction equipment.
