Two Speeds Keep CTLs on Track

Sept. 27, 2016
Sponsored by Eaton
Compact track loaders (CTLs) have been the fastest-growing segment of the mobile equipment market since the start of the century. With broad, high-flotation rubber tracks, these machines operate on underfoot surfaces that challenge the stability of biggerwheeled machines. Buyers of CTLs, such as contractors, owner-operators, farmers, ranchers, and rental agencies, want faster and more powerful machines to increase productivity.

To achieve these goals, a current trend with CTLs is two-speed drives. This is because a typical CTL spends 40% of its time in high-speed mode (transporting and traveling) and 60% in lowspeed mode (digging and doing other high-torque work). The two-speed mode boosts productivity without the substantial cost of a continuously variable transmission.
