OTC Brings Energy Solutions Ashore

April 2, 2018
The Offshore Technology Conference will probably hold the largest gathering of fluid power professionals in the U.S. this year, as evidenced by the more than 100 fluid power-affiliated companies that will be exhibiting.

In the summer of 1969, Houston launched both Apollo 11 and the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC). After a half-century in both realms, necessity is still birthing inventions: Beginning April 30th and running through May 3rd, Houston’s NRG Park will be the place to see and learn more about the cutting-edge technologies bringing the earth’s energy ashore to power global economies.

Following OTC 2018’s opening day ceremony on April 30th, executives from the oil and gas, automotive, and renewable energy industries will participate in a Chairman’s Panel on Energy Transformation. Each presenter will share outlooks on, and strategies for, transitioning from hydrocarbons to renewables. Participants include:

  • Carlos Ghosn, chairman and CEO, Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi
  • Eldar Saetre, president and CEO, Statoil
  • Remi Eriksen, group president and CEO, DNV GL
  • Ernest Moniz, MIT professor and former United States Secretary of Energy

Technology innovations will then be celebrated during OTC’s Spotlight on New Technology Awards. This program will showcase innovations destined to answer industry’s needs well into the future. Winners that may be of particular interest to H&P readers include:

  • Baker Hughes, a GE company (BHGE), producer of DEEPFRAC, a deepwater multi-stage fracturing service that uses ball-activated sleeves and patented BeadScreen flowback control technology to simplify operations, accelerate completion times, and enable rapid stimulation of 20+ stages in a single trip.
  • Halliburton, producer of GeoBalance Automated Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) System, a comprehensive suite of software and hardware enabling automated managed pressure control from drilling to completion. It combines automatic chokes, rig pump diverters, flow metering, and advanced control algorithms with proven hydraulics modeling to provide accurate pressure control at discrete points throughout well construction.
  • NOV, producer of Seabox, which makes it possible to treat seawater at the seabed, thus providing high quality water for reservoir pressure support. Driven by the suction pressure of a downstream pump, this innovation enables disinfection and sedimentation capabilities without adding chemicals.
  • Teledyne Marine’s FlameGuard P5-200 fire-resistant electrical penetrator reduces risk to personnel and assets in potentially flammable atmospheres where ATEX and IEC Ex standards apply, such as those found on offshore platforms. It is rated for 5 kV and 200 A at 5,000 psi.

“We can never forget that companies like the 2018 Spotlight Award winners are driving the technological advancements necessary to propel our industry for the next 50 years,” says Paul Jones, Spotlight Award Committee Chair.

For an idea of the entire range of technologies to be displayed and discussed at OTC, see H&P’s Exhibitor list. It will help when budgeting your time among all the show exhibits.

In summary, OTC offers attendees:

More than 350 peer-selected technical presentations;

More than 500,000 ft.2 of exhibit space filled by 2000+ providers of products and services;

Networking opportunities with 70,000+ energy professionals from more than 100 countries;

An opportunity to combine OTC with client meetings, business proposals, and company training.

“For the past five decades, OTC has been a global hub for people and companies that seek to learn about and share the latest technological advancements in offshore energy,” concludes OTC 2018 Chairman Wafik Beydoun. “OTC was created as a place to cultivate innovation with the future in mind.”
